My grandma has a great home

I love my whole crew & try to spend as much as I can can visiting, despite my long distance from home. Whenever I go up to see them, my Dad consistently lectures myself and others about how long it’s been since I’ve seen my family. I really try my hardest to make it out to see the whole crew, but it’s tough to get there in about three weeks. When I do go see the whole family, all of us often lay at the home & do knitting together; it’s one of the only things we can do in our area. The only section that I don’t enjoy is that family has a grossly warm house. I realize that my parents are several decades older than I, but how my parents can stand being in 85 degree indoor air all afternoon long is weird to me. My mom and dad has their temperature control turned up almost at full power, every single afternoon. The oil furnace is always cranking out hot & dry air, & there is not a single area of the home to escape from it unless I excuse myself to go outdoors. I’ve tried asking if mom and dad would adjust the temperature control a bit lower, but my parents are insistent that they both need the gas furnace chugging along at 90% full speed. I’ve asked my Dad before how him and mom can afford it, but apparently they have a harshly new heating & cooling system that requires minimal power to handle the air in her house. I assume I will get it when I turn their age.

My grandma has a beautiful

I love my family and try to spend as much time as I can visiting, despite my long distance from home. Whenever I go up north to see my immediate family, my mom always lectures me about how long it’s been since I’ve seen my grandma. I honestly try my hardest to make it out to see her, but it’s difficult to get there more than every two or three weeks. When I do go see her, we often sit at her house and do crafts together; it’s one of the only things we really have in common between us. The only part that I don’t like is enduring her grossly overheated house. I realize that she’s several decades older than I, but how grandma can stand being in 85 degree indoor air all day long is crazy to me. She has her thermostat turned up almost at full power, every single day. Her heating system is constantly cranking out hot and dry air, and there is not a single corner of the house to escape from it unless I excuse myself to go outside. I’ve tried asking if she could adjust her thermostat a bit lower, but grandma is insistent that she needs her furnace chugging along at 90% full speed. I’ve asked my mom before how grandma can afford it, but apparently she has an extremely new heating and cooling system that requires minimal power to efficiently handle the air in her house. I guess I know what equipment I’ll need to invest in when I turn 80.

We need a plumber

There are services that are better left up to licensed industry professionals.  These services cost money. When possible, I do things for myself. I am capable of changing the oil in my car. Even though it is gross plus time consuming. But I complete that necessary service, so I don’t have to spend my money for it. I try to do most of my own plumbing repairs too. I have replaced all sorts of the inner workings of our toilet. I have replaced most of the faucets in the house and updated many other plumbing fixtures. However, there is one aspect of the plumbing system that I leave to the professionals. I do not deal with our septic system. The septic tank is where all of the sludge and waste collects. The sludge dumps into the septic tank. The septic tank then functions to separate the waste  into layers. It basically attempts to turn everything as liquid as possible.. The liquid then drains and leaches far away from the house underground. Usually septic systems are dependable, last a long time, and one  need a plumber to come in every five to ten years. But occasionally, there are problems with back ups or the need to pump out septic tank. I do not attempt to do this myself. The septic system is a dirty, smell and messy.  Also the drain line and tank is located below the ground and requires a lot of digging to access. I do not have the skills, tools or willpower to tackle this dirty work. So for septic system maintenance and repairs, I hire a plumbing supplier to handle it. It is worth the expense to get help for that. I do not want to be in charge of that dirty work.

plumbing fix

I’d really like to fix the plumbing

There are services that it is just easier and better to pay for. Some things, however, I dig my heels in and do on my own. For example, I change my own oil in my car.  I don’t like the job, and it is time consuming. But I am happy to avoid spending money on a job I can do. I tackle most of my own plumbing repairs around the house. I have replaced all sorts of guts in the tank of my toilet. I have replaced  the faucets in the kitchen and bathroom and  repaired several plumbing fixtures. However there is a plumbing job that I leave up to a licensed plumber. I do not repair, service or pump my septic system. The septic tank collects sludge plus wastewater. The septic tank is located in the backyard, and takes all the waste and separates it.  It works to extract the liquid and then drains far away from the house, leaching away under the ground.  Most of the time, the septic system works  properly and rarely needs a plumber to come in. But there is the possibility of a malfunction, back ups or other troubles with the septic or drain line. I do not do work on these issues myself. The septic is a dirty and smelly piece of machinery. Also the drain line and tank is located several feet under my yard. I do not have adequate skills, tools or ambition to confront this dirty job. So for septic repairs, I consult a plumbing corporation to handle it. It is worth the price  to get help for that. I do not want to get involved in that dirty job.

I can’t fix a septic system

There are services that are just better handled by a professional. Other things, I dig my heels in and do on my own. I change the oil on my car, although it is gross plus time consuming. But I am capable of completing that service, so I don’t need to pay for it. I do most of my own plumbing maintenance and services too. I have replaced all sorts of guts in my toilet. I have replaced most of the faucets and upgraded a lot of the plumbing fixtures. However, there is a job that I leave alone. I do not do anything with my septic system. The septic tank is where all the wastewater and sludge lands. The sludge accumulates in the septic tank. The septic then takes everything in there and divides it into layers. It moves liquid away from the house. The cleaned out liquid drains far away from the house under the ground for health issues. Most of the time, the septic systems is reliable and rarely needs a plumber to service it. But sometimes the septic needs to be pumped, back ups or there’s other concerns. I do not tackles these septic issues myself. The septic system is a disgusting.  The job is messy and  requires  machinery. The tank and lines are located several feet under my yard. So I do not have the skills, tools or desire to handle this dirty work. So for septic plan service, I call a plumbing specialist to handle it. It is worth every dollar to me to get help for that. I do not want to mess with that dirty work.

I shouldn’t do my own repair

There are services that it is better to pay for. Some things I handle on my own. I change my own oil in my vehicle. The job is dirty and time consuming. But I am capable of doing that service properly, so I don’t pay for it. I do most of my own plumbing repairs as well. I have upgraded many of the parts on my toilet. I have updated the faucets and improved  multiple plumbing fixtures. However there is one plumbing aspect that I leave totally alone. I do not ever tackle my septic system. The septic tank is where all the sludge and wastewater ends up. The sludge collects in the septic tank and then leaches away. The septic system takes all the waste water  in there and separates it into layers. It basically turns as much as possible into liquid. The liquid then drains far away from the house under the ground.  Typically, septic systems are reliable and need very little maintenance from a professional plumber. But sometimes it fills up, back ups or other concerns occur with the septic system or drainage line. I do not handle this job myself. The septic system is a dirty and messy component. Plus, the drain line is located more than four feet under the yard. I definitely do not have the skills, tools or determination to handle this dirty task. For any septic system repairs, I hire a plumbing contractor to handle it. It is worth every dime to me to get help for that. I do not want to be responsible for that dirty task.

A Very Cold Hobbit

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the Lord of the Rings. Not just the movies, either. I love the books, I love the artwork. I love the whole culture of Middle Earth. At the last JRR Tolkien convention I attended I got a breathtaking sword. It’s a replica sword, of course, it would be too dangerous to have a real one. So you can imagine how delighted I was to hear that the local movie theater was having an all night marathon screening of the trilogy. A friend even bet me I couldn’t last all night. He knew the heating system at the theatre was out of commission. We were in the middle of the winter, and he didn’t think I could sit for 12 hours straight in a building with no central heat. I was determined to win that bet, heater or no heater, so I went to the movies as planned. I brought a jacket, a blanket, some gloves, a scarf, and I even put my little space heater in the trunk of my car. If the indoor air quality was too dangerously cold maybe they would let me bring the little electric heater inside. It turns out they didn’t, a space heater in the theater violated fire code, but it was worth a try. I settled into a seat right under a large air vent in the ceiling, and got all wrapped up before I realized it was still blowing cold air. Not only was the furnace broken, but the AC was stuck on full blast.

Comic convention and HVAC

I wonder if you have ever been to a comic convention? It is a weekend convention that consists of a big gathering of fans.  The event is typically held in a large hotel or center, and it’s all about stuff pertaining to comics. Comic books, super heroes, and villains are all a part of it. It might sound dorky, but  these events are the most fun you can have without breaking the law. Most people attend in costume and sometimes body paint.  It’s cool.  I enjoy seeing people dressed like heroes and their favorite villains.  At this year’s event, I got to meet a hero called Air Conditioning Man! Of course, there is not really such thing as air conditioning man! But the  central HVAC equipment at the convention hall broke down, and we were in desperate need of a hero to save the day. Our hero was sent from an independent heating and cooling company.  The licensed technician showed up with a tool box and dressed in a blue uniform.  He did not really blend in the with the caped and  masked heroes.  But everyone stepped out of the way for the repairman to pass as if he was the special guest. I had worn my costume, and with every passing minute, I was getting super sweaty.  With no cool air from an air conditioner, the hall felt like an oven. I searched out the nearest air vent and stood under it.  Unfortunately, it was doing nothing but pumping out super hot air.

Fixing the septic system

There are services that it is just better to man up and pay for it. Some things I dig my heels in for. I change my own oil on my car. Yes, it is gross and time consuming. But I am capable of doing that service, so I don’t pay for it. I do most of my own plumbing repairs too. I have replaced all sorts of parts on my toilet. I have changed over the faucets and replaced many plumbing fixtures. However there is one plumbing piece of equipment that I leave alone. I do not mess with my septic system. The septic tank is where all your sludge and waste goes. The sludge collects in the septic tank. The septic system then takes everything in there and separates it into layers. It basically makes everything as liquid as it can. The cleaned out liquid then drains far away from your home under the ground. Usually septic systems are good to go and rarely need a plumber to come in. But sometimes breaks, back ups or other issues occur with your septic system or drain line. I do not do this myself. The septic system is a dirty and messy piece of machinery. Also the drain line is like five feet under my yard. So I do not have the skills, tools or willpower to handle this dirty job. So for septic system repairs, I call a plumbing business to handle it. It is worth every penny to me to get help for that. I do not want to do that dirty job.

Have you gone to a comic convention? It’s typically a weekend-long convention, that brings together  fans, and is held at a grand hotel or center.  A comic convention centers around comic-related stuff, such as comic books, super heroes, cartoons, and that sort of thing.  Although you might think it’s dorky, you’d be wrong.  These conventions  are such fun.  Fans show up in elaborate costume and body paint.  The whole atmosphere is is cool. You look around and the people are dressed as their favorite heroes and villains.  Last year, I got to meet a new hero called Air Conditioning Man.  Actually, i’m kidding.   There is no hero called  air conditioning man.  When the central HVAC at the convention hall suddenly quit, we were desperate for that type of hero.  An  independent HVAC company was called, and they sent a licensed and uniformed technician to handle the repair.  All of the caped and masked avengers and super friends stepped out of the way to make room for this new kind of hero.  The HVAC repairman brought in his tools and got to work. I was dressed in my  Starfleet outfit, and I quickly became overheated.  With no AC, my handmade costume was causing me to sweat profusely. I searched out the nearest air vent and stood right in front of it, but there was no cool air to be head.  I got hit with tepid air, that was worse than nothing.  The  entire convention simply waited until the air conditioning system was working again.
