Yesterday, I was watching the news and saw that there was a giant storm in the middle of the ocean right of the coast from where I live. I don’t know how I missed this storm, I guess I have not been keeping up with the news like I should. However, it is now time to get ready because the storm is to make if the power goes out. After this I rush home to make sure that my house is ready to withstand the strong wind that the storm is producing. I don’t have anyone to stay with me during so I hope that I don’t lose power. My main fear is that my HVAC system will turn off due to a power outage. I have asthma so I need the air inside my apartment to stay as crisp and clean as possible. If the power goes out, I will not have anything to circulate the air through the filtration vents and the air will become stagnant. I rely on my air conditioner to help keep the air flow going. I frantically call my local HVAC technician and ask if they will be making house calls during the storm. The HVAC technician just laughed at me and said that they will not be making any house calls until the storm has passed. This did not ease my mind about my heating and cooling issue. It honestly made everything worse. I did not know what I was going to do if the storm made my HVAC system turn off. I am hoping I can just find a friend to stay with!
It seems like new articles are emerging everyday regarding inventions coming from colleges all across our country. It’s great to see the minds of our younger generation coming together to develop items that we will use in the future. I’d like to see more of our colleges focusing on productive work and less political work. This past week, one particular university developed a new cooling system that should lead to lower energy costs in the future. The cooling system has radiative capabilities that allow significantly less energy to be used, and it also sends excess heat into outer space. It works similar to how solar panel systems work, but it focuses more on releasing heat rather than collecting energy. Given the fickle nature of collecting solar energy, this type of cooling system should provide a solid reduction in energy expenses until solar technology can further increase. Ultimately, I believe the future will use all solar energy, and we will no longer have to worry about energy costs with our air conditioning system. The sun is really an unlimited source of power for us, and we have barely begun to tap into the energy that it can provide. I am looking forward to the day where I do not have to worry about finances when deciding what temperature to set my thermostat at. Maybe this day will never come, but I will continue to dream anyways. People probably never thought that air conditioning systems would become a reality either, but creative minds did not let this cynicism stop them from pushing forward.
Recently, I started working on a new activity center for the teenagers at our church. Every Sunday, they are always sitting around in the afternoon waiting for the evening service to start. I figured that the activity center would give them a place to hang out and stay busy at the same time. We have a modular building on our property that was being used as storage, and it was just the right size for an activity center. I purchased an air hockey table, ping pong table, arcade basketball game, television, game system, foosball table, and carpet ball table for the room. It was an awesome place for the teenagers to spend time in, and the air conditioning system in the room kept the place very cold. The only issue with the air conditioning system that I did not anticipate was that all of the activity in the room put a great strain on the A/C system. The entire time that we used the room for storage, we never had any problems with the air conditioning. At first, the A/C unit kept working fine with the new activity center, but we noticed a gradual change in the temperature over several months. If you set the thermostat to sixty-five degrees, the A/C unit could only get the temperature down to seventy degrees. Ultimately, we sold the existing A/C unit, and we used that money to purchase a unit that could support the increased activity. Armed with multiple activities and a new A/C unit, the room is now the favorite place to be on property.
