I started off as a server on when I had just graduated from high school. I knew that college was a good idea, but I honestly did not want to enter another classroom for as long as I live. I wanted to get right into a career where I could make money and start saving. This particular serving position presented itself to me when one of my dad’s friends, who owns a fancy restaurant, said he was looking for some new people. I did that for a few years. The money was great at first but then we hired on too many servers, so we started making less. Then I heard about the locally-based cruise-ship company. They needed HVAC system technicians and even though I did not know the very first thing about climate control, they did offer free training and said that no experience was required. If it worked out, this heating and cooling technician gig would have paid almost double compared to what I was making serving. HVAC technology was never something I thought I would end up working with, but it seems like the climate control gods chose me. After a few weeks of training, I learned everything, from cleaning the air ducts, down to rewiring a digital thermostat. On the boat, every room has its own customizable thermostat with remote, so that leaves a lot of room for error. Sure enough, during my first week as HVAC technician, the entire system shut down while we were at sea. I had to reset the whole climate control system and reprogram each room’s HVAC zone control!
