When my hubby Augustine & I first moved into our home, both of us were bummed about the boiler system. The boiler was located in the basement, and it was big, rusty & ugly looking. It took half the space & did not look as though it could heat at all… What was horrible is that the living room floor had a bunch of grates in it to allow the heat from the boiler to rise up, and Augustine & I thought it looked so classless. We wanted to patch the holes up, get rid of the boiler & get a classy gas fireplace, but since he & I were newlyweds, we could not afford a new heating system method & a totally revamp of the house. After a Winter, he & I were thankful all of us left it in the house. That boiler in our home was the greatest heating method in the world. It was super powerful & could heat our entire home in under 10 minutes! On afternoons where the temperatures are -20 degrees, the boiler did the job just as effectively. The several grates in the living room were hideous. So what Augustine & I did was patch all but one of them. We left the largest one that was centrally located in our living room. Both of us framed it with carpets & it did not look half bad, but he & I used to rest on that grate in the afternoon before work to get a little heating. After the boiler died, we did cover the hole & get a gas fireplace. It is not even sort of the same. The fireplace is not as effective at all.
